National Visa Center

US EmbassyThere are two National Visa Center locations in the United States. Their job is to process you applications which has been sent from the USCIS where you had originally sent your documents to. See how the immigration system works and where the NVC fits into the immigration system.

National Visa Center

Firstly, once you have sent all your documents to the USCIS and it is approved. The documents are then sent to the National Visa Center (NVC) in Portsmouth, NH for immigrant visa pre-processing at the correct time. You will note that immediate relative categories do not have yearly numerical limits. Having said that however family preference as well as employment based immigrant categories have numerical limits each year. Consequently wait times can be long in this regard.

USCIS sends your documents to the NVC

The national visa center will now invoice you for your visa application fees as well as collect your visa application and supporting documentation. Accordingly they will then proceed to hold your visa petition until an interview can be scheduled. This will be with the US Embassy or Consulate abroad, say with the US Embassy Ottawa as an example. So it does take a while.

The management process works on priority dates and cut off dates. They will notify you of this. If you want to know what you dates are then you should refer to the Approval Notice that you received from USCIS.

They then hold onto all these documents until such time that an interview can be arranged. Basically with the US Embassy where you wife or fiancee is located depending if it is a K1 Visa application or a CR1 visa application.
