US Visa Medical Examination

US EmbassyWhat does the US visa medical examination entail? You will need a medical examination if you are applying for a K1 Visa application or a K3 Visa. This is done before the interview and needs to be submitted with your application. These are the basics and they do change so check the latest from the US government website for any minor updates which they might have added.

US Visa Medical Examination

The medical examination is a required part of the application process for certain nonimmigrant and immigrant visas. This is needed by the application for a CR1 visa as well. Now you will note that the medical examination is conducted by a doctor designated by the U.S. Department of State (DOS). The reason for this medical exam is to determine if the applicant has any medical conditions that would make them inadmissible to the United States. There are also blood tests that will need to completed as well as a check on the applicants vaccination status. Note that this is done before your visa interview.

What to have at the Medical Examination

You will need to have the following documents with you:

  • You must have your visa interview appointment letter
  • The passport you are going to use
  • Recently taken passport-sized color photographs
  • Also a copy of your immunization records
  • The DS-260 confirmation page of you application

Remember that you will need to pay for your own examination fees. These include the examination fees, including x-ray and blood test fees. This must all be paid directly. There will also be fees for vaccinations and blood tests. The The medical examination will also need to include not only a look at the persons medical history as well as a physical examination. It will also require a chest X-ray (check for TB) and blood tests (for applicants 15 years of age or older). Laboratory tests for certain infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, syphilis or hepatitis. There are also certain vaccinations which need to have been administered before the issuance of a visa.

Note that they will either send the results to the Embassy of Consulate directly. Alternatively they will give you a sealed letter. You may not open the letter. If you open the letter they may invalidate your medical exam, so don’t do that. Also note that you X-Rays you will need to take back to the US with you.

Don’t forget that at the interview to bring your original birth certificate, notarized English translation, and a photocopy.
